Stop Child Abuse & Neglect

Social-emotional
development
is Child sexual abuse prevention.”

—Wren Bailey

Wren serves as the head of Prevention education and curriculum for The SCAN Team, which works with children, schools, families, and communities to “Stop Child Abuse & Neglect.”

The Team’s work focuses on preventing child sexual abuse, which affects 1 in 10 children.

Wren became passionate about child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention when she discovered CSA had been covered up within her own community for over a decade. Learning about the factors which had led to the original abuse, hearing the adults’ past and present reactions to the events, and watching the community navigate the uncovered tragedy, Wren made two observations:

No one wants to talk about child sexual abuse…
and everyone is terrified of it.

As Wren processed the trauma of her community, and simultaneously did her daily work as a social-emotional development (SED) specialist, she realized:
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE PREVENTION.
Preventing CSA and healthy SED both depend on

  • assertiveness, strong communication skills,

  • the ability to draw and hold confident boundaries,

  • accessing the clear-thinking brain in times of stress,

  • strong adult-child communication,

  • healthy adult-child relationships,

  • … and so much more!

With these experiences shaping her expertise, Wren is driven by a clear vision:
to give every child the social-emotional skills and supportive relationships that keep them safer.

And that’s exactly what SCAN’s programs deliver—resources that educators, parents, and communities can use immediately to strengthen their children’s safety, confidence, and emotional well-being. Through Wren’s partnership with The SCAN Team,
CSA prevention is transformed from a difficult topic into an empowering, practical, and approachable part of everyday learning.

This is the future of prevention: proactive, relational, and accessible to every child.
We invite you to be part of it.
